Real Heroes don’t wear Capes!

I won a competition when I was very young dressed as a super hero. As you get older you realise that the heroes in life don’t necessarily wear capes. That heroics are much simpler than that, a smile when you feel down, a hug when you feel lonely. a dollar in a cup.

Appreciation of what they do is what people remember, it has been an ongoing battle for me as it was not a strong point in my family as I was growing up. I have to remember to say thank you as it was not something I learnt from an early age.

Acts of appreciation, what does society say about them, lets have a look:

Does Popularity equal Quality?

I lost my Bose headphones recently, they were beautiful and the sound impeccable. I cannot afford to pay $200 for another pair so have been  buying made in China $3.00 ones from a two dollar shop. They do not do the same job and they do not last for very long, stretch them too far and they become headphone not headphones,

I can always excuse this with the fact it will take nearly 100 pairs of them to cover the cost of another set of Bose headphones but the quality is just not the same. What is it that has us declare what is quality? Relationships, computers, phones are several areas in our lives that we use this word for, so what has the world said about it and how have they defined quality over historical times, lets have a look:

quality1

1. Steve Jobs, CEO of the iconic Apple company kept the launch of the Apple 2 computer on hold for over a year until his company got it right, the first successful mass produced computer and the beginning of a journey that saw him being sacked from his position in 1985 and returning to save the company in 1997 with ideas such as iMac, the iPod, the iTunes Store, the iPhone, the App Store, and the iPad.

quality2

2. Quality is developed by having integrity in what you do 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 12 month a year, all the years of your lifetime: Circle of Life.

quality3

3. Do you perform only for an audience, remember your soul is watching if you are in the middle of a desert.

quality4

quality5

5. They say you can change or create a habit over a 21 day period, quality is on of those thing you can create in that time too. It doesn’t take for ever.

quality6

6. Leaders help themselves and others to do the right things. They set direction, build an inspiring vision, and create something new. Leadership is about mapping out where you need to go to “win” as a team or an organisation; and it is dynamic, exciting, and inspiring.

Yet, while leaders set the direction, they must also use management skills to guide their people to the right destination, in a smooth and efficient way: Leader of the Pack

quality8

7. John Ruskin(8 February 1819 – 20 January 1900) was the leading English art critic of the Victorian era, also an art patron, draughtsman, watercolourist, a prominent social thinker and philanthropist. He wrote on subjects as varied as geology, architecture, myth, ornithology, literature, education, botany and political economy. His writing styles and literary forms were equally varied. Ruskin also penned essays and treatises, poetry and lectures, travel guides and manuals, letters and even a fairy tale. The elaborate style that characterised his earliest writing on art was later superseded by a preference for plainer language designed to communicate his ideas more effectively. In all of his writing, he emphasised the connections between nature, art and society. He also made detailed sketches and paintings of rocks, plants, birds, landscapes, and architectural structures and ornamentation. he definitely lived the above quote in the many areas he strived in life.

quality9

8. I have always loved this speech by Allan Watts on the subject of Choice, may we make them sincere, intelligent and skillful: Allan Watts – Choice.

quality10

9. Many people have issues in increasing the amount they charge for their services, especially in the healing sector. How much do you charge for your gift?  Provide quality and it should not be an issue.

quality11

10. In producing quality in our lives, there must be a high level of caring involved. As this quote states it’s not in the knowledge you have gathered over the years but the effect you have had on people that is remembered at your passing: If Everybody Cared.

quality13

11. Peter  Drucker ( November 19, 1909 – November 11, 2005) was an Austrian-born American management consultant, educator, and author, whose writings contributed to the philosophical and practical foundations of the modern business corporation. He was also a leader in the development of management education, he invented the concept known as management by objectives and self-control, and he has been described as “the founder of modern management”.

quality14

12. A rather controversial statement as we are all born within our mothers wombs and then it is up to us to survive and prosper with the support of what is offered to us: Time of my Life.

quality15

13. The king of fire-walking, Tony Robbins says it is the questions we ask in our lives that have the quality of it occur. Never stop asking quality questions.

quality16

14. I spent a lot of my teens hanging around with people of questionable quality to try to get at my parents. I gave it up and spent a lot of time alone before I found my tribe: Can’t Get Enough.

quality18

15. Said to be a taskmaster to the extreme, Steve Jobs had this as his motto when dealing with his employees, a request for the best quality possible each day.

We have the choice of leading a quality life or one that is so so. I vote for the former.

Namaste until next time, my dear friends.

Does it strike a Chord?

Whats your favourite program? What did you think on reading that? About T.V., radio, the gym. How do you get with the program in your life? In my life I do personal development program , online and Face to Face. Not much of a TV program kind of person, can’t stand the negativity of them all and definitely not a fan of realism TV, I know how to cook and I don’t need to renovate a house or marry a person I just met half an hour ago.

Strangely I have heard people having conversations amongst themselves like the people from these shows are their best friends, this challenges my sense of community participation profoundly.

So lets get with the program and have a look :

Sloane’s parents have already lost one child; Sloane knows they’ll do anything to keep her alive. She also knows that everyone who’s been through The Program returns as a blank slate. Because their depression is gone—but so are their memories.

Under constant surveillance at home and at school, Sloane puts on a brave face and keeps her feelings buried as deep as she can. The only person Sloane can be herself with is James. He’s promised to keep them both safe and out of treatment, and Sloane knows their love is strong enough to withstand anything. But despite the promises they made to each other, it’s getting harder to hide the truth. They are both growing weaker. Depression is setting in.

And The Program is coming for them.

I miss your Stupid Face!!!

Put a brave face on, she’ll be right. I’m sure we all have had this said to us at some time in our lives when we are reacting in a not so happy way to the events that are going on in our lives at that exact moment. Our face expresses what is going on for us moment to moment, we cannot hide it from the world: Joy, Grief, Lust, Love all are revealed.

Children are especially good at this, most of the time their faces are filled with wonder, yet as we age we learn new faces to put on, lets have a look at what people have to say about this phenomenon:

face1

1. What is your game face? Happy Face, Serious Face, Wonderment Face, there are many to choose from.

face2

2. The dark night of the Soul moment, this moment for me is when I nearly got sacked from my job for not charging connection fees for fellow staff when I was the Union rep. in am extended pay dispute with our employer. The Area manager threatened me, my direct boss said he would go to the media with it and the threat disappeared magically. Here’s some Beast songs : Not what you think!!

face3

3. When you are scowling do you look beautiful?

face4

4. definition of Proverb a short, well-known pithy saying, stating a general truth or piece of advice – synonyms: saying · adage · saw · maxim · axiom · motto . Here’s my favourite song about dating : Chasing Cars.

face5

5. Possibly the most famous quote about kittens in the world, I’m sure you are putting on your kitten smile as you read this!!

face6

6. You can’t be serious , can you. We all have one of these for those moments we want them to get the point we are putting across. The best Face song ever written.

face7

7. This is why I love Oprah Winfrey, she never does the latter. Yes, I got the Oprah reference in again, Yay!!

face8

8. Obvious song for an obvious statement : Instant Karma.

face9

9. Marilyn Monroe (born Norma Jeane Mortenson; June 1, 1926 – August 5, 1962) was an American actress and model. Famous for playing “dumb blonde” characters, she became one of the most popular sex symbols of the 1950s, emblematic of the era’s attitudes towards sexuality. Although she was a top-billed actress for only a decade, her films grossed $200 million by the time of her unexpected death in 1962.She continues to be considered a major popular culture icon.

face10

10. You can be a lover in a one night stand, you cannot walk side by side as friends. That’s what friends are for.

face11

11. The king and queen of the airwaves, turn it off, and go for your friends when your problems raise their ugly heads.

Face12

12. When we affect another’s face to break out in a smile, that is when we are at our best: Walking on Sunshine.

face13

13. Not really about faces, but if you live your life by this motto, you will have lead a great life.

face14

14. As I mentioned earlier we build up a collection of faces to cover our inner child’s wonderment with life, do you work on removing them so you can return to those moments: Baby I love your Way!!

Face15

15. The cute dog and silly quote one left to the end, do we all have a Monday Face?

They say the face reveals all along with the eyes. They can be changed by love and hate, I go for the former every time.

Namaste until next time, my dear friends.

You can shake the World!!

Arrived at one of my voluntary gigs yesterday and the collective potential team were having a brain storm as to where they were at. CP are a start up Personal Development company who I give my time to because I get heaps back helping people get real, here’s the link to check them out Collective Potential.

One of the things we got to was that we had lost touch with our community , so I volunteered to take on the Community Management role to see what we needed to restore it. Made me start thinking what does being part of a community mean ad how does society look at it, here we go :

community1

1. Cute animal shot of the blog, but wise words about that in a community there are not always leaders that stand out, its more of a communal effort with everybody putting their bit in.

community2

2. Lance Edward Armstrong is an American former professional road racing cyclist. He is the 1993 Elite Men’s Road Race World Champion, and he had won the Tour de France seven consecutive times from 1999 to 2005, but was stripped of his Tour de France victories in 2012 after a protracted doping scandal. He must have forgot the above: Lance sings.

community3

3. We, Collective Potential are based in a co working space for women, these spaces are becoming more prevalent as people seek out communities to begin their solo entrepreneurships.

community4

4. Star Wars for We are Family.

community5

5. Community is not just about fitting in, it’s about standing up for what you believe in and dealing with evil.

community6

6. A controversial figure both during her life and after her death, Mother Teresa was widely admired by many for her charitable works. She was both praised and criticised for her views. She also received criticism for conditions in the hospices she ran. But for her hundreds of people would not be alive as she partook in her adopted community of Calcutta. She treated people Just one at a Time.

community7

7. What a great analogy, well done Mrs. Griffiths.

community10

8. As a community grows and expands it creates the opportunity for transformation of all members not just the chosen few. Transformation.

community11

9. Marianne Williamson is one of my top ten because of words like these ones. She is one of the greatest supporters of Love on the planet.

community12

10. I do number 9, I cannot imagine that the people who do it do it in their own homes, so why do they do it in the street, I have no idea. Build me up Buttercup.

community13

11. All the Nobel Prize winners gave something to the world to  receive the accolade, it was not about the money they had accumulated or how they looked.

community14

12. Stand out and make a difference, noble and beautiful words, please fulfil them sometime in your life. The Man in Black sings on making a difference.

community15

13. My dear 89 year old mother spent her life doing this, it rubbed off for all of her kids. I teach English to asylum seekers, my brother does a radio show, the eldest of my sisters does sustainability stuff and the youngest plays Taiko drums in a community orchestra.

community 16

14. Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary, politician, and philanthropist, who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was the country’s first black chief executive, and the first elected in a fully representative democratic election. His government focused on dismantling the legacy of apartheid through tackling institutionalised racism and fostering racial reconciliation. Politically an African nationalist and democratic socialist, he served as President of the African National Congress party from 1991 to 1997. He oversaw South Africa ending apartheid without serious recriminations on the white minority which was a huge possibility :   Free Nelson Mandela.

community 17

15. And finally a wall poster to remind you how to DIY community.

I am so glad my mother inducted us into being community members who value contributing to our different communities, it’s much better than sitting in front of the TV being  a lounge lizard.

Namaste until next  time, my dear friends.

There is no Beauty in the Finest Cloth!!

We are having a movie day at the Darebin Intercultural Centre today. It is a screening of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. We provide lunch before and the attendees were discussing the countries they come from: Malta, China, Vietnam, India, Ireland and Italy, most of how arrived as refugees , many of them asylum seekers who arrived  in our country by boat.

Hanh, our elderly vietnamese who attends our events and was an asylum seeker who arrived by boat back in the 1970’s was sharing about how she was helping the new intake of Syrians who are arriving in our country because they have nothing. And she said how she could relate to that and how poorly our planet is set up so that all people survive.

It led to a conversation about the sustainability of our beloved planet, so I am enquiring into what has been said and done over the years in regard to this. Lets have a look:

sus1

1. I watched a discussion on A T.V. showed called Q and A the other night with a scientist and a politician discussing Climate Change. The politician said that it had been made up by NASA. The scientist asked him did he believe we had landed on the moon, and who was responsible for that.

sus2

2. Point taken, Prince Ea has a few words to say about this: Sorry.

sus3

3. Will there be an Amazon Forest in the future for our children and grandchildren to visit. In the past 40 years 20% of the rainforest has been cut down. Here are 20 Facts about the Amazon.

sus4

4. They say that everything is music, what tune what is happening in Syria playing:War, what is it good for?

sus5

5. Anna Lappé is an author and educator, known for her work as an expert on food systems and as a sustainable food advocate. With her mother Frances Moore Lappé, Anna co-founded the Cambridge-based Small Planet Institute, an international network for research and popular education about the root causes of hunger and poverty. The Lappés are also co-founders of the Small Planet Fund, which has raised nearly $1 million for democratic social movements worldwide, two of which have won the Nobel Peace Prize since the Fund’s founding in 2002.Anna’s research on sustainable agriculture has taken her from Brooklyn to South Korea, China, Bangladesh, India, Poland, France, Italy, Mali, Kenya, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Brazil, Mexico, Canada, and beyond.

sus6

6. Sustainability depends on us all, stop using plastic bags, throwing rubbish in the streets, purchasing pre wrapped items from supermarkets etc. etc. etc. : Sustainability Song.

sus7

7. One  of my favourite songs is by Paul Kelly , From Little things, Big Things grow. It depicts the action of an indigenous tribe in Australia and their battle for their land with Lord Vestey, a British landowner: Here are the words:

Gather round people let me tell you’re a story
An eight year long story of power and pride
British Lord Vestey and Vincent Lingiarri
Were opposite men on opposite sides

Vestey was fat with money and muscle
Beef was his business, broad was his door
Vincent was lean and spoke very little
He had no bank balance, hard dirt was his floor

From little things big things grow
From little things big things grow

Gurindji were working for nothing but rations
Where once they had gathered the wealth of the land
Daily the pressure got tighter and tighter
Gurindju decided they must make a stand

They picked up their swags and started off walking
At Wattie Creek they sat themselves down
Now it don’t sound like much but it sure got tongues talking
Back at the homestead and then in the town

From little things big things grow
From little things big things grow

Vestey man said I’ll double your wages
Seven quid a week you’ll have in your hand
Vincent said uh-huh we’re not talking about wages
We’re sitting right here till we get our land
Vestey man roared and Vestey man thundered
You don’t stand the chance of a cinder in snow
Vince said if we fall others are rising

From little things big things grow
From little things big things grow

Then Vincent Lingiarri boarded an aeroplane
Landed in Sydney, big city of lights
And daily he went round softly speaking his story
To all kinds of men from all walks of life

And Vincent sat down with big politicians
This affair they told him is a matter of state
Let us sort it out, your people are hungry
Vincent said no thanks, we know how to wait

From little things big things grow
From little things big things grow

Then Vincent Lingiarri returned in an aeroplane
Back to his country once more to sit down
And he told his people let the stars keep on turning
We have friends in the south, in the cities and towns

Eight years went by, eight long years of waiting
Till one day a tall stranger appeared in the land
And he came with lawyers and he came with great ceremony
And through Vincent’s fingers poured a handful of sand

From little things big things grow
From little things big things grow

That was the story of Vincent Lingairri
But this is the story of something much more
How power and privilege can not move a people
Who know where they stand and stand in the law

From little things big things grow
From little things big things grow
From little things big things grow
From little things big things grow

8. There are many quotes like this, pointing to the fact that how we treat the earth is how we are treating ourselves and future generations. Mahatma Gandhi said it in the 1940’s, we do not appear to have learnt much: I am that I Am.

sus9

9. Ralph  Marston (February 16, 1907 – December 7, 1967) was a professional football player who spent a season in the National Football League with the Boston Bulldogs in 1929.

sus10

10. Indigenous wisdom from people who lived on lands for thousands of centuries is often ignored these days as primitive, I think thats a damn shame: Elders Wisdom.

sus11

11. We hold ourselves superior to all other creatures on the planet, and wipe countless species out each year, when will they turn on us?

sus12

12. Arnie, the terminator in the good guy movies about coming back to protect the leader of humanity from the machines knows how the planet will survive, unfortunately the Australian government does not. The Terminator.

sus13

13. William Andrews McDonough is an American designer, advisor, author, and thought leader. McDonough is founding principal of William McDonough + Partners, co-founder of McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry (MBDC) with German chemist Michael Braungart as well as co-author of Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things and The Upcycle: Beyond Sustainability—Designing for Abundance, also with Braungart. McDonough’s career is focused on creating a beneficial footprint. He espouses a message that we can design materials, systems, companies, products, buildings, and communities that continuously improve over time.

sus14

14. The profit mongers of the world seem to think they can do anything to our planet. What they fail to realise that the earth will still be here long after the human race disappear from its surface as many other dominant species have: Earth Song.

sus15

15. Zinn described himself as “something of an anarchist, something of a socialist. Maybe a democratic socialist.” He wrote extensively about the civil rights and anti-war movements, and labor history of the United States. His memoir, You Can’t Be Neutral on a Moving Train, was also the title of a 2004 documentary about Zinn’s life and work. Zinn died of a heart attack in 2010, aged 87.

How do we sustain the world if we continue with tribalism and fighting wars over it. Sustainability must  include all things on the planet being equal.

Namaste until next time my dear friends.
