What Interculturalism could provide?


I have started watching Al Jazeera News broadcasts because I was sick of the mindless photo opportunities our Prime Minister down here in Australia, nicknamed as Scotty from marketing uses main stream media in our country for. Today I say an item where the Italian ambassador for the Republic of Congo had been ambushed and killed on a country road and it made me think would these people have done that if they knew why the ambassador was in their country, fundamentally to provide aid in the name of doing good deeds between the two countries.

Then I thought about as to why had I named my blog I am an Interculturalist all those years ago. The definition of Interculturalism goes as follows: Interculturalism refers to support for cross-cultural dialogue and challenging self-segregation tendencies within cultures. … It is based on the recognition of both differences and similarities between cultures. It has addressed the risk of the creation of absolute relativism within post modernity and in multiculturalism. Cross-cultural dialogue is what drew me to the Darebin Intercultural Centre after attending a Colombian film night at which there were about twenty cultures hanging out and being friends, all I can say is that I was hooked from that night.

Lockdown number three in my hometown of Melbourne, Australia, bummer. Only 5 days this time, but the dreaded stage four: 5 kilometres and four reasons to leave your home. Even for that short period of time it severely effected two musician friends of mine earnings, they had to cancel their main income making events for the month. When contacted bt them I offered the first to keep the money and send me a download and the second I gave a donation to because she sent us a download for being on her dance crew.

These people keep our hearts open and alive and I am so willing to support them when life gets in their way as this five day hiatus has. Whats that ringing in my Ear?


In my younger days I was involved in the rhythm and blues seen in Melbourne, Australia. First as a door bitch with my soul friend Katie then as a sound technician when our regular one failed to show up and the band says I had heard them enough to know what they sounded like. So I spent quite a few years listening to loud rock music.

Move forward to this COVID year and a ringing began in my right ear recently, off to my doctor of seven years, Kirsten and I shared my musical history with her. Kirsten sent me to the Audiology Clinic because it is unusual to have tinnitus, which she thought it sounded like in only one ear. The audiology test began and ceased quickly, as here is the gross bit. I was asked when I had cleaned out my ears as they could not see my eardrums. I replied do Mexican Indian wax candles count, if not probably over 50 years ago.

That is why I have been pouring ear solution in my ears for the past two to three weeks so that I can have it extracted without damaging my ears on Wednesday. This has made me ponder whether doing the thing you love without thinking of the health consequences are worth it. My love of Music says yes it was, and fingers crossed they will be able to fix them. I’m going to have a look at what society has said about loving rock and roll and why we would put our selves in such sensory danger:

Cacao is a different journey each time!!!


I thought I knew what a cacao ceremony was up until last Sunday, you drank cacao and did a dance ceremony, that is how the ones I had been to had gone for years. Well was I in for a surprise. I entered the room it was to be held in and it was set up in a powerful ceremonial circle and for some reason I realised that we were not going to be dancing today. We went through a powerful ceremony were we were given our cocoa and then spoke what we would like to get out of the ceremony. Audrey then spoke about some of the travels that had lead her to leading cacao journey’s and the history and the benefits of cacao.

Cacao is the pure form of Chocolate, before it is processed, before anything else is added; just the beans baby!

The pure Cacao carries a bunch of healthy goodies and is also a beautiful plant medicine and ally.

Cacao is a powerful super food, and its superpower is beyond just providing the body with nutrients like Magnesium, Zinc, Calcium and Iron. (not to mention the serotonin, anandamide, theobromine and phenethylamine).

Its potency goes beyond the mind. This is the invitation of Cacao as a Medicine: to take us out of the head for a moment, to sink deeper into the body and the heart.

Whether in ceremony, meditation, dance or sharing circles, Cacao  allows us to be true to our hearts, tune into what is going on inside and tune out some of the busy-ness that surrounds.

So what is available as you take a ceremony, meditative experience, dance or sharing circle, what has happened over the centuries:

I must admit we are lucky in Melbourne, Australia to have basically come out of Lockdown because we put in the hard yards of Stage 3 and Stage 4 for a period of 7 months. Can you imagine not being able to go more than 5km for months on an end, we did that and it worked The second wave began and we ended it whereas other places with the same number of cases have gone from hundreds to thousands in the same time frame

Now we are out there is a follow up crisis, now that we can go out I and other people I know are hesitant to do so on a regular basis so I reached out to the one thing I know my body loves, Conscious Dance. The first dance I attended I had to eave because it became a Contact Improvise demonstration not a dance, the two are totally different to me and it had become false advertising that it was a dance. The one I found to replace it is called Open Floor and as it is summer here the first dance was in Park-lands. I have since returned to one of my old stomping grounds at Rosina Auditorium on a Wednesday night.

I also make used to make chai for three dances, two of them clashed last Saturday so I chose the one I had been doing the longest, Mojo Dance – The dance of connection. So what have communities said about the healing power of dance over the generations, lets have a look:

Well, we are nearly there, the end of 2020, some say the worst year we,as a species have gone through. For me, it meant a visit to the Melbourne Clinic, a beautiful relationship with Amy, a period of time alone, English tutoring weekly,then when COVID went away in our state of Victoria, Australia the opportunity to dance again, one of my favourite things to do.

So, as always, things ended. Some I wanted too , and others I didn’t. I was a prat and I learnt some good things. Looking up the meaning of prat I confess I did not know of the second:

  1. an incompetent or stupid person; an idiot.
  2. a person’s buttocks.

I was referring to the former in my use of the word, some may say I behaved in the manner of the second at times.

Nobody gets through life with out losing someone they love, someone they need, or something they thought was meant to be. But it is these losses that make us stronger and eventually move us towards future opportunities for growth and happiness. Over the past 6 and a half decades, I’ve had my share of painful losses. When my time of mourning was over in each circumstance, I pressed forward, stronger and with a greater under standing and respect for life. Here are a few lessons I learnt on the way:

  1. You are not what happened to you in the past.
  2. Focus on what you have, not on what you don’t.
  3. Struggling with problems is a natural way of growth.
  4. It’s OK to fall apart for a little while.
  5. Life is fragile, sudden, and shorter than it often seems.
  6. Emotionally separate from your problems.
  7. Don’t make a problem bigger than it is.
  8. View each challenge as an educational assignment.
  9. Things change, but the sun always rises the next day.
  10. Giving up and moving on are two different things.
  11. Perfect relationships don’t exist.
  12. You must love yourself too.
  13. Don’t let others make decisions for you.
  14. Resentment hurts you, not them.
  15. Consciously nurture your inner hope.
  16. It is better to be hurt by a truth than comforted by a lie.
  17. Not getting what you want can be a blessing.
  18. Laughter is the best medicine for stress.
  19. Worrying is literally a waste of energy.
  20. Even when it’s hard to move, take a small step forward.
  21. You are better off without some people you thought you needed.

What’s wrong with You?


Always I have been told I suffer from depression, and recently that is what they said when I entered a psych unit for the sixth time during COVID lock down. I then met a beautiful woman who suggested I see her therapist which I eventually did. He asked me a lot of questions, one being about my work history before my first breakdown. My dark secret is that I worked for the Governmental Social Security aka Centrelink for 13 years.

My heart had been telling me to leave for the last three years of this time which I did not take notice of, therefore my mental health went down and I was eventually dismissed never to work again. The psychologist asked me had I seen any violence during this time and for some reason I told him about the three stabbing I had seen over this time, I used to joke at parties that I was probably the only person in the room who had seen this many if any.

He instantly suggested that I was probably suffering from UN-diagnosed PTSD, AKA post-traumatic stress disorder. I also explained that violence was just a way of life over the years at Centrelink. It actually made a lot of sense for me after he explained the background of it.That people were not used to seeing so much violence in their lives but many remained untreated.

So PTSD, how have we discussed it over the years, does society want to disown it, lets have a look:

Have you ever been Crazy?


Psychiatric Units are not noble establishments, private or public. You lose all your rights when you enter both. Having been in both I vote for private over public, the public ones are heavily understaffed and all conditions are thrown in together, not a very practical healing space that leads to violence and sexual abuse on a daily or weekly basis.

I am a bad patient when I enter these institutions, all I want to do is lay on my bed and eat even though the meal times are ridiculously early. I don’t want to discuss my “problems” with the nurses or the mental health professionals or attend the numerous therapy information sessions to fill time in. I have been through this process five times spending a total of six months in different units.

Last time was during a COVID Lock down wave. I was there for 4 weeks and was told I would be released the following Friday. Filling in the release papers I felt I was lying about the questions was I ready to go home. I found out they were releasing patients they felt had made some progress as they did nor want them to become Institutionalized during lock down. Therefore I spent the next three weeks on my couch surviving on Uber Eats. Then,one day Uber Eats, the next day, miracle cure I was as I had been before the episode and no repercussions. My doctor said it was the meds kicking in and my therapists that my issues had died down.

One of the main things I have learnt over my mental health adventures. is that happiness is not something to postpone for the future, it is something you design into the present, starting from today. Here’s a few things you can try on:

  4. Embrace Life’s Challenges.
  5. Find the balance that allows you to be truly who you are.
  6. Love your body enough to take care of it.

  8. Treat others the way you want to be treated.
  9. Set a good example.
  10. Accept what is, and live for the possibilities that lie ahead.

When I go into these mental health free-falls is is the people who show me Love and Respect for All, Everybody Included that have helped me get through. How do you fill the gap left?


I was having trouble getting over a recent love affair so began reading about breakups. I found this really good blog in it titled: Losing the Love of Your Life: What to do when you lose the one by Natasha Adamo Here are the first four paragraphs of it, it explained it very well.

Losing the love of your life makes you realize that love can truly be a double-edged sword. It can make us feel so uniquely connected to the world and fill our hearts so they are overflowing. It can also slash our hearts to shreds, leaving painful emotion seeping out for a long time to come.

And one of the most painful places to be in is the one where you feel regret, guilt, and pain for losing someone you see as too much of a loss to recover from. The one who was there for you, loved you, and did the “thick and thin” thing because they believed in you. But now they are gone.

Losing the love of your life and actually realizing it can take some time to surface. There is pain on both sides when a breakup occurs. A time of healing. A time when moving on begins and life slowly becomes happier. The pain subsides, and you reflect on the lessons you learned and seek new love.

There are also times when this doesn’t happen. Where you find yourself thinking of someone every day.  Losing the love of your life is painful. You feel heavy with guilt, and regret lives in your gut. It is often at this point you question yourself, and think that this person you lost, has left a hole in your life that can never be filled.

I keep going between the two and feel I am leaning towards the former at the moment although there are days when the latter takes over. So how does society advise you to fill that hole when it sticks around, lets have a look, some are harsh:

Are breaking up and letting go the same thing, both have nothing to do with weakness, the latter more to do with strength. Here are 12 things worth knowing as you wander this path.

You/I are responsible for our own happiness, no one else. You/I are responsible for our behavior, no one else. If you are not seeing the things in life that you want, look at yourself. What are you afraid of? Self-sabotage is when you pike at the last moment, afraid of what lies ahead (even if it’s good for you).

Our COVID Love Affair.


7 months,from 22nd March until now, that is how long our beloved city of Melbourne has been in lock-down from COVID, most of it stage 3 and 4. We have had a love affair with masks and crosses on the ground. I began the first stages in a psychiatric unit at the Melbourne Clinic and have ended it breaking up with the women I wanted to spend my life with.

It has made Zoom like technology a must at most houses, for the kids to do their school work, parents to do their work as the government asked them not to go to work unless they really had to, and for my friends in the conscious dance community to listen to the DJ’s they danced to weekly in dance halls all around Melbourne.

So what has the world said about COVID, because lets not forget it is a world-wide pandemic, here we go:
